Effective therapy
What is effective therapy?
The SFBT viewpoint
Insoo Kim Berg and Steven De Shazer founder of SFBT say the essence of therapy is future-focused, goal-orientated and pragmatic:
- If it ain't broke don't fix it
- If it works do more of it
- Small steps
- Identify and amplify change
- Elicit descriptions of what will be different when the problem is resolved
- Search for exception in the client's life
- Enable the client to define clear goals
- Focus on what you want in the future
- Evoke existing resources
The Human Givens approach
The Human Givens School of Psychotherapy suggests that an effective therapist will:
- Understand depression and how to lift it
- Understand the processes involved in addiction and how to overcome them
- Help immediately with anxiety problems including trauma or other fear related symptoms
- Be prepared to give advice if needed or asked for
- Not use jargon or "psychobabble"
- Not dwell unduly on the past
- Be supportive when difficult feelings emerge but not encourage people to remain in an emotionally aroused state
- Help people to draw on their own resources
- Help people think about their problems in s new and more empowering way
- Use a wide range of techniques
- Take as few sessions as possible
